SEPTEMBER IS PASSPORT AWARENESS MONTH

Are you planning a big trip this year or next, but don’t have a passport, or your passport has expired?  Now might be the best time to get that taken care of!  September is Passport Awareness Month.  The U.S. Department of State is urging people to apply for their passport in the fall or the winter when demand is down.  The department is also encouraging travelers to routinely check the expiration date on their passport and be aware that many countries require a minimum of six months of passport validity.

Debbie Gay, the Director of our Records and Support Services department, says people also need to know that there is a lag time between when you apply for a passport and when you receive it.  “The normal timing for a passport processing is 8-11 weeks,” said Gay.  “If you want it expedited, it’s 5-7 weeks.”

Here is what you need to bring:

  • A valid picture ID (driver’s license, military ID and a copy of identification)
  • Original or certified copy of birth certificate
  • Old passport
  • Naturalization papers
  • A passport photo is required.  If you don’t bring one with you, we can take the photo for $16
  • Form of payment (not cash)

Gay adds, customers cannot use cash to pay for a passport or passport renewal.  “Make sure that they bring a check or a money order with them,” said Gay.  “We send more people out of here to go to Amscot to get a check or money order or to go back home and grab a personal check.”
