Check fraud alert - check being scanned using smartphone

If it seems too good to be true…well, you know the rest!  You’ve also likely heard the saying, “The check is in the mail.” Our finance team is seeing a troubling increase in the number of fake checks being passed across the country, and here in Pasco County.  The latest trend includes checks that appear to be coming from county government. That’s right – the crooks are using government checks to try and scam you! We've already seen more than 300 fake checks designed to look like they’re from the Pasco Board of County Commissioners. Dedicated professionals with the Treasury Management and Capital Asset Division were able to intercept this scam. Had they not, the loss to taxpayers could have been over a million bucks! If you think you’ve received a fake check from the county, please do NOT try to cash it or deposit it. Instead, contact us at the Pasco Clerk and Comptroller’s Office (352) 521-4566, Option 3 or (727) 847-2411, Ext. 4566:
