[ARCHIVED] MINUS COURT, VETERANS STAND DOWN REMAINS A GO

Operation Stand Down banner shows unshaven man in backward cap having lunch, giving thumbs up.

Pasco County's Operation Stand Down event, set for Friday and Saturday at the Concourse Rotary Pavilion in Shady Hills, is a go. Veterans interested in the services and opportunities provided by Stand Down organizers and partners are encouraged to make themselves available.
Repeat: Operation Stand Down is very much on.
Unfortunately, Veterans Court, a keenly anticipated aspect of past (and, assuredly, future) Stand Downs has been canceled as a result of the recent spike in area COVID-19 cases.
Traditionally held at the mini-Home Depot building in Safety Town, Veterans Court involves dozens of people -- clerk and court personnel, Stand Down representatives, sheriff's deputies, and veterans with legal issues and their families -- gathered in close quarters in an enclosed space for a prolonged period, a clear violation of federal Centers for Disease Control guidelines.
Veterans Court organizers could not in good conscience put so many vulnerable people at risk. Nor could they guarantee they could overcome the technical challenges inherent in conducting a "virtual" court from the Safety Town Home Depot building.
With deepest disappointment, Veterans Court operatives chose the only remaining option available to them.
Contrary to rumor, cancelation of Veterans Court had nothing to do with the number of preregistrations, which paralleled almost precisely previous years' paces. The decision was entirely based on safety concerns, and not at all on a lack of support for the area's veterans community.
Florida Sixth Judicial Circuit Judge Shawn Crane is scheduled to attend the Stand Down Friday to speak with veterans, discuss the Veterans Court cancelation, and answer questions.
Again, Operation Stand Down remains scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Concourse Rotary Pavilion in Shady Hills: additional information.
